Azabujuban Takishita: Charcoal-Grilled Fish Set Meals Worth the Wait
Tokyo Mate
Azabujuban Takishita is a grilled fish set meal restaurant where you can enjoy seasonal fish cooked over binchotan charcoal. Here's everything you need to know — waiting tips, the full menu with prices, and how long the wait actually takes.

What Makes Takishita’s Grilled Fish Special
Takishita (旬の味 たき下), located on Azabujuban's Patio street, is a grilled fish set meal restaurant that cooks seasonal fish over premium binchotan charcoal. Since opening in 2001, it has become known among locals as the go-to grilled fish spot in Azabujuban, with long lines forming every lunch hour.
Takishita starts grilling each order from scratch — nothing is pre-cooked. Even if there's a wait, your fish always arrives freshly grilled. The intense heat of the binchotan gives the outside a crisp sear while keeping the inside moist. This made-to-order charcoal grilling method is why people have kept coming back for over 20 years.

Waiting Tips (Realistic Wait Times)
Takishita does not accept lunch reservations — walk-in only. During peak lunch hours (12:00–13:00), the line extends outside the restaurant.
💡 Based on a Sunday 13:30 visit
- 2 groups ahead / actual wait about 20 minutes
After 1 PM, the peak dies down and wait times get shorter. That said, some menu items can sell out early when ingredients run out, so we recommend arriving by 13:30 at the latest.
Best Times to Visit
- Right at 11:15 opening → walk in with no wait
- After 13:30 → post-peak, shorter waits
※ Wait times can vary significantly depending on the day and time of your visit.

Takishita Charcoal-Grilled Fish Review
Black Cod Kyoto Miso + Blackthroat Seaperch Yuzu-Grilled (¥1,980) ⭐ Recommended!
銀だら西京・黒むつ柚香焼き
This is Takishita's signature dish — two types of fish in one set. The blackthroat seaperch has a crispy skin with moist flesh underneath, and the yuzu aroma cuts through the richness of the white fish cleanly. The black cod, paired with Kyoto-style white miso, has a deep, savory umami as the miso melds with the fish's natural fat.

Akou Salt-Grilled (¥1,760)
あこう鯛 汐焼き
Akou (a premium white fish in the grouper family) grilled simply with salt. The intense binchotan heat gives it a crisp exterior while the inside stays bouncy and tender — this is the most straightforward way to taste the fish itself.

Salmon Shinshu Miso-Marinated (¥1,760)
銀しゃけ 信州味噌漬け
A generous thick-cut portion that's plenty filling. The subtle sweetness of Shinshu miso pairs with the salmon's fat for a mild, comforting flavor.

How to Get the Most Out of Your Meal at Takishita
① Sprinkle the house-made furikake on your rice and a whole bowl disappears in no time. Rice refills are free.

② Add a touch of soy sauce to the grated daikon and eat it with the fish — it cuts through any richness and keeps each bite clean.

③ Three side dishes come with every set. If it's your first visit, the grilled fish set alone is more than enough.

If you're looking for a proper Japanese grilled fish set meal while visiting Azabujuban, Takishita is the safest bet. Thanks to the binchotan-grilled seasonal fish and consistently solid quality, it's a spot that locals keep returning to — one of Azabujuban's signature grilled fish restaurants.
