The founder is Isamu Tatsuno (辰野勇), who set up the company in Osaka on 1 August 1975. A month later, two friends he climbed with joined him.

The name comes from the French MONT BELLE, meaning "beautiful mountain". mont-bell builds its products around two basic ideas: "Function is Beauty" and "Light & Fast".

mont-bell's light down jackets use either 800 fill power or 1000 fill power EX down. The 2026-2027 down pamphlet sorts the jackets by thickness and use, from thin models through medium and thick ones to extreme-cold gear.
