Nemuro Hanamaru Nikaidate Matsuri: Two Fish, One Price

Two pieces of fish on one nigiri. Same price as always. Three days only.

Kaiten Sushi Nemuro Hanamaru runs an anniversary event called the Nikaidate Matsuri, where the sushi comes out with two pieces of fish stacked on the rice and the price stays where it normally sits. The 2026 edition ran on 27, 28 and 29 July, marking the group's 32nd year. That run has already finished, but the details shift a little from year to year, so this is a record of what the 2026 version looked like and what to watch if you want to catch the next one.

What nikaidate (二階建て) means: two fish, same price

Here is how the official site puts it.

Surprise: we stack two pieces of sushi topping into a two-storey build, and the price stays the same. We recommend taking the whole thing in one bold mouthful. Please enjoy it with your eyes wide at a volume that spills out of your mouth.

The original of the format is said to be the nikaidate scallop, and nikaidate is a registered trademark. The poster is blunt about the pitch: twice the fish, the same price, twice the smiles. In front of you, the rice really does mostly disappear underneath.

The 2026 run: three days and nothing more

The company's founding date is 29 July, and the event was built as the three days ending on it. The announcement went up on the official site on 16 July, eleven days before the first day.

The four we ate

We went twice and worked through four of the five items on the poster. The one left over was the live scallop, and that one is already served as a two-storey build on the regular menu. The official page calls the nikaidate scallop the original of the whole idea, so what the festival actually changes is the other four.

Chutoro first. That is the photo above, and the plate holds two pieces. With two layers of fish, the fatty topping hangs off the rice and drapes over the side.

The akami arrived on a different coloured plate from the chutoro. It is cut thick enough that you can read the grain running through the cross section.

Salmon at two layers covers the rice almost completely.

The sweet shrimp is counted in shrimp rather than slices: two shrimp on each of the two tiers, per piece. The plate holds two pieces.

There is a reason the official text recommends one big mouthful. Eat it the polite way and the upper layer slides off.

Catching the next one

The contents change a little each year. Three things are certain about 2026.

• The last day was 29 July, the founding anniversary
• It ran for three days only
• The announcement appeared in the official news section eleven days ahead

Nothing has been announced for 2027 as of this writing. Since the gap between announcement and opening day was under two weeks, checking the official news page from early July is what keeps you from missing it.

Store details: Nemuro Hanamaru KITTE Marunouchi

The branch here is the one on the fifth floor of JP Tower KITTE Marunouchi, right in front of Tokyo Station.

The queue has rules worth knowing in advance. The ticket machine only becomes usable after the 11:00 opening and only once the store has filled up, and you cannot wait at the storefront before 11:00, since the escalators and lifts up to the fifth floor start running at 11:00 as well. Once you have a ticket, scanning its QR code with your phone lets you check how many groups are ahead of you from wherever you are, and the call comes through by LINE or email.
