The branch name Soseiji (創成寺) comes from the idea of a temple (修業寺) where staff learn and train. From the counter seats you can watch the cooking in the open kitchen, and there are also tables and floor seating.

Okushiba Shoten also has branches elsewhere in Sapporo and in Hakodate, Asahikawa, Tokyo and more.

Okushiba Shoten Sapporo: Wait and Things to Know
The Ekimae Soseiji branch doesn't take reservations. You line up in front of the shop and go in by turn.
When I arrived around 13:30, about 30 people were waiting. After about an hour and a half in line, I got in at 15:00. While we waited, staff took orders in advance. Deciding your menu, soup, spice level and rice size beforehand makes ordering easier.
⚠️ The official website lists 15:00 as the lunch last order, but on my visit a staff member checked the length of the line and closed it at 14:30. Entry can close early depending on how many are waiting, so it's best not to show up close to the end of lunch.

How to Order at Okushiba Shoten Sapporo
At Okushiba Shoten, you pick a menu item and then choose ① soup → ② spice level → ③ rice size → ④ free topping. Oyster soup, spice level 6 or higher, 400g or more of rice and paid toppings cost extra.

① Choose your soup
Shrimp soup is Okushiba Shoten's signature. Chicken soup is also available at no extra charge, and oyster soup costs 450 yen more. Pick whichever of the three broths you like.
② Choose your spice level
Spice runs from level 0 to 12. Level 0 isn't spicy, level 1 is slightly spicy and level 2 is medium. Level 4 is described as about as hot as store-bought "hot" (辛口) curry. Up to level 5 there's no extra charge; level 6 is +50 yen, levels 7-8 +100 yen, levels 9-10 +150 yen and levels 11-12 +200 yen.
③ Choose your rice size
Choose from small 150g, regular 220g, medium 400g (+150 yen) or large 600g (+280 yen). The lemon served with the rice is free, and you can choose whether to have it.
④ Choose free and paid toppings
Soup curries come with vegetables such as cabbage, carrot, eggplant, green pepper, mizuna and kabocha squash as standard.
For the free topping, pick one of broccoli, okra, burdock root, potato, fried onion, fried garlic, extra cabbage or lotus root.
Paid toppings cost 150 to 1,200 yen, including grilled cheese for 200 yen, 4 bouncy shrimp for 250 yen, fried oysters for 300 yen and thick-cut bacon for 450 yen. The most expensive is the Hokkaido beef fillet steak at 1,200 yen.

Okushiba Shoten Sapporo: My Soup Curry Review
From the counter seats you can watch the soup curry being made in the open kitchen.

The shop has a notice explaining how to enjoy soup curry. First smell the soup and taste a spoonful, then dip rice into the soup or eat the two in turn.
Partway through, you can squeeze lemon over the rice for a fresher taste. You can also tip all the remaining rice into the soup, so eat it however you like.

✅ Okushibag soup curry, 2,180 yen
The Okushibag soup curry is topped with a thick beef hamburg steak. Along with the hamburg come carrot, eggplant, green pepper, kabocha squash and other vegetables, with fried onion on top.
The hamburg is seared golden on the outside and fairly big. Cut it bit by bit and dip it in the soup curry. There are plenty of different vegetables too, so you can alternate them with the meat.
The rice comes in a separate bowl with a slice of lemon.

✅ Hokkaido beef fillet steak soup curry, 3,180 yen
The Hokkaido beef fillet steak soup curry is topped with thick-grilled beef cut into several slices. Garlic chips are scattered over the steak, with potato and vegetables alongside.
The meat was still red in the middle, and the steak came already sliced into easy pieces. Dip a slice in the soup and eat it with rice. The garlic chips and potato go well with the meat.
