Osaka Castle Tickets & Access: Boat Rides, Road Train
Tokyo Mate
Osaka Castle works well as a half-day trip: start at Morinomiya Station, go around Nishinomaru Garden, the Kaiyodo Figure Museum, the main tower and the Gozabune boat, then take the Aqualiner to Hachikenyahama.

Osaka Castle half-day route
This is the half-day route I actually took, leaving Morinomiya Station at 8am and reaching Temmabashi Station at 1:40pm.
It uses the Electric Car and the Road Train to cut down on walking, and at the end you take the Aqualiner and carry on with the afternoon from around Temmabashi Station.
| Time | Schedule |
|---|---|
| 8:00 | Morinomiya Station |
| 8:10 | Breakfast at R Baker Osaka Castle Park |
| 9:30 | Electric Car → Otemae |
| 9:40 | Nishinomaru Garden |
| 10:30 | Kaiyodo Figure Museum |
| 11:00 | Osaka Castle main tower |
| 12:00 | Exchange for a Gozabune boarding ticket (departures every 10 minutes) |
| 12:10 | Board the Gozabune |

※ Times are based on how long each move actually took on my visit.
The standard admission for the paid facilities on this route adds up to 6,300 yen. With the 3,500 yen Osaka Amazing Pass 1-day ticket, you save 2,800 yen on facility fees alone, and you can also ride Osaka Metro at no extra charge.

Getting to Osaka Castle and the Road Train
The stations most people use for Osaka Castle are Morinomiya Station, JR Osakajokoen Station and Tanimachi 4-chome Station. I started from Morinomiya Station so I could take the Electric Car after breakfast.
If you use the Osaka Amazing Pass, you can ride Osaka Metro lines at no extra charge (JR is not included).

✅ Osaka Castle Road Train and Electric Car
Osaka Castle Park is large and has some uphill stretches, so the Road Train or the Electric Car cuts down the walking.

The Road Train and the Electric Car board at different places and run different routes, so pick one to match your sightseeing plan. The Electric Car's Jonan bus stop is about a 5-minute walk from Morinomiya Station.
- Road Train
① Morinomiya → ② JO-TERRACE OSAKA → ③ Gokurakubashi
- Electric Car
① In front of the Jonan bus parking → ② Babacho → ③ Otemae → ④ Sakuramon → ⑤ Hokoku Shrine

Here are the hours and fares for the Road Train and the Electric Car.

Nishinomaru Garden
Take the Electric Car to Otemae and you arrive at the entrance to Nishinomaru Garden.
Nishinomaru Garden is a large lawn garden on the west side of Osaka Castle and is well known for cherry blossoms in spring. It is one of the best-known photo spots, where you can fit the main tower, the moat and the stone walls into one frame.

Osaka Castle main tower and Kaiyodo Figure Museum
Go through Sakuramon Gate into the castle grounds.

✅ Kaiyodo Figure Museum
MIRAIZA OSAKA-JO is a building put up in 1931 as the headquarters of the Imperial Japanese Army's 4th Division. After the war it was used as a police building and as the Osaka Municipal Museum, and in 2017 it opened as a commercial complex.

The Kaiyodo Figure Museum is on the first basement floor of MIRAIZA OSAKA-JO, and it shows more than 3,000 figures, from anime to animals and Japanese culture, across 10 zones.
| Hours | 9:30-17:30 (last entry 17:00) |
| Closed | Irregular |
| Admission | 1,000 yen (free with the Osaka Amazing Pass) |
| Location | MIRAIZA OSAKA-JO B1F 📍 View on Google Maps |

✅ Osaka Castle main tower
Toyotomi Hideyoshi began building Osaka Castle in 1583, and the present main tower is a reconstruction from 1931.

The main tower ticket also covers the Osaka Castle Toyotomi Ishigaki-kan.
The entry lines were split between tickets bought on the day and advance tickets or passes. If you buy a web ticket in advance or use the Osaka Amazing Pass, you can go in without queuing at the ticket counter.

In the main tower, floors 1 to 5 and 7 are exhibition floors and floor 8 is the observation deck. Floor 6 is closed to visitors. General visitors can take the elevator up to floor 5, then use the stairs the rest of the way to floor 8.

From floor 8 you can look out over Osaka in a 360-degree panorama.

Osaka Castle boat rides: Gozabune and Aqualiner
✅ Gozabune boat
Near Gokurakubashi Bridge, north of the Osaka Castle main tower, is the pier for the Gozabune boat, which goes around the inner moat for about 20 minutes.

Tickets are sold at the counter on site. If you use the Osaka Amazing Pass, you also have to exchange it at the counter for a boarding ticket with a set departure time.
| Hours | 10:00-16:30, departures every 10 minutes |
| Duration | 20 minutes |
| Closed | 28 December to 3 January; may not run in bad weather |
| Fare | Adults 1,800 yen (free with the Osaka Amazing Pass) Children 900 yen |
| Location | 📍 View on Google Maps |

You can only board at your set time, and you need to be at the pier 10 minutes before departure.

From the Gozabune you look up at Osaka Castle's high stone walls and the main tower from close to the water. You can also see the carved marks and the face-shaped stone on the walls from the boat, so it feels different from the view you get from the main tower.

✅ Aqualiner cruise
About a 10-minute walk towards Osaka-jo Hall brings you to the boarding point for the Aqualiner water bus.

Even with the Osaka Amazing Pass, I had to get a boarding ticket issued at the Osakajo Port ticket counter before getting on.
| Hours | Osakajo Port 10:00-16:00, departs on the hour |
| Closed | Irregular |
| Fare | Adults 2,000 yen (free with the Osaka Amazing Pass) Children 1,000 yen |
| Location | 📍 View on Google Maps |

The Aqualiner water bus leaves Osakajo Port on the hour.
From Osakajo Port (on the hour) it goes to Yodoyabashi Port (20 past the hour) → Hachikenyahama Port (half past the hour) → and back to Osakajo Port.

As you get closer to Yodoyabashi, modern-era buildings along the river and the Nakanoshima scenery come one after another, and you see a different side of Osaka.

After about 30 minutes on the water, I got off at Hachikenyahama pier. Instead of going back to Osaka Castle, I went straight to Temmabashi Station and carried on with the afternoon.

FAQ
Q. Is there an admission fee just to walk around Osaka Castle Park?
A. Osaka Castle Park and the outside of the castle walls are free to look around. Some facilities, such as the main tower, Nishinomaru Garden, the Kaiyodo Figure Museum and the Gozabune, charge separately.
Q. Is half a day enough for Osaka Castle?
A. If you start at Morinomiya Station, go around Nishinomaru Garden, the Kaiyodo Figure Museum, the main tower and the Gozabune, then take the Aqualiner to Hachikenyahama, you can see it in half a day. My actual route took about 5 hours 40 minutes, from leaving Morinomiya Station at 8:00 to reaching Temmabashi Station at 13:40.
From the grand main tower to the Gozabune on the moat and the Aqualiner along the river, Osaka Castle showed me different scenery the further I went. Covering both the castle grounds and the waterways in half a day made this Osaka Castle trip all the more memorable.
