Hanadako is right at the entrance to Shin-Umeda Shokudogai, which sits under the railway viaduct next to the crossing between JR Osaka Station and the Hankyu Department Store Umeda main store. You don't have to go deep inside Shin-Umeda Shokudogai to find it; it's right by the entrance.

Hanadako queue and how the line works
Hanadako's shopfront is in the narrow passage at the entrance to Shin-Umeda Shokudogai, so instead of a long line in front of the shop, you're directed to a marked waiting area that keeps the passage clear.
The line starts at the shopfront and follows the arrows on the signs to the marked space around the crossing and the pillars. When the queue gets long, rather than standing wherever you like in front of the shop, follow the signs and the staff's directions.

When I went at about 1:40pm, I was roughly 15th in the queue. About 10 minutes after joining it, a member of staff asked whether I wanted takeaway.
When I said yes, I didn't keep waiting in the general queue: I stepped out of the line, went straight to the till, ordered and paid.

The sign at the shop said Cash only when I visited, so I paid in cash. Once I'd paid, the packed takoyaki came straight away.

Hanadako takoyaki menu and prices
Hanadako's signature dishes are the basic takoyaki and the negimayo (ねぎマヨ). What makes the negimayo distinctive is the spring onion piled on until you can't see the takoyaki.
All of Hanadako's takoyaki uses fresh octopus. The basic takoyaki and the negimayo come in 6, 8 or 10 pieces.

Takoyaki is the basic item, Osaka-style takoyaki served with sauce and mayonnaise.
Negimayo is Hanadako's signature, with spring onion and mayonnaise piled on top of the takoyaki.
Takosen puts takoyaki between thin senbei crackers, which makes it easy to eat while walking.
| Menu | Price |
|---|---|
| Takoyaki | 6 for 570 yen / 8 for 760 yen / 10 for 950 yen |
| Negimayo | 6 for 670 yen / 8 for 860 yen / 10 for 1,050 yen |
| Takosen | 240 yen each |
📌 Pick one of 5 sauces
You choose the flavour for the takoyaki and the negimayo when you order.
- Sauce
- Ponzu
- Dashi soy sauce
- Salt
- Shiodare (salt seasoning)
If you don't want mayonnaise, you can ask them to leave it off when you order.
The Hanadako negimayo I ate
What I ordered was Hanadako's signature negimayo, 6 pieces for 670 yen.

Negimayo piles on spring onion until the takoyaki is hidden, then adds mayonnaise.
I ate takoyaki at three places on this trip, and Hanadako had the best balance of octopus, sauce, spring onion and mayonnaise. Of the three, the Hanadako negimayo also suited my taste best.
If you like spring onion, you could go for the negimayo before the basic takoyaki.
Where to eat your Hanadako takeaway
After taking the negimayo away from Hanadako, I headed toward the Hanshin Department Store Umeda main store to buy something to drink with it.

I bought a mix juice at Ganso Mix Juice Osaka-Umeda main store, then went up to the rooftop plaza on the 12th floor of Osaka Umeda Twin Towers South, the building the Hanshin Department Store Umeda main store is in.
It isn't an office-only space: it's a public rest area that ordinary visitors can use too. With benches and greenery, it was a good place to sit for a while in Umeda.

When I was there, plenty of office workers were resting and eating their lunch boxes. I sat among them for a while with my Hanadako negimayo and mix juice. If you get takeaway from Hanadako, this route is worth keeping in mind as somewhere to sit and eat in Umeda.

The 3 takoyaki shops I tried
On this trip to Osaka I went to three of them: Hanadako, Shinsekai Kankan and Acchichi Honpo Dotonbori.
Number 9, Shinsekai Kankan
When I went, they poured sauce over takoyaki that had been grilled in advance and handed it over.

It wasn't the crisp style, and the octopus inside was small compared with Hanadako's.

Number 17, Acchichi Honpo Dotonbori
Acchichi Honpo Dotonbori is near the Don Quijote in Dotonbori, so it was easy to drop into while sightseeing. There's a space downstairs where you can eat, so you can have your takoyaki comfortably indoors with the air conditioning on.

The takoyaki was crisp on the outside and the sauce went well with it. Being able to sit indoors after walking around Dotonbori on a hot day was good too.

If I had to pick one again, I'd choose Hanadako.
The negimayo with its pile of spring onion is what stayed with me, and the octopus and sauce went together best there.
Eating takoyaki at three places showed me how much the taste and texture differ even within Osaka. Of the three, the Hanadako negimayo with all that spring onion is the one that comes to mind first now the trip is over. Next time I'm in Osaka, I think I'll be queueing at Hanadako.
