Credit Card Tap-to-Ride Fare Cap on the Sapporo Subway and Tram
In Sapporo, you don't need to buy a pass to get a daily fare cap: tapping a credit card or similar is enough. The cap started on March 26, 2026 on the subway and on April 27 on the tram.
On the subway you pay at most 830 yen on weekdays and 520 yen on Saturdays, Sundays, holidays and over the New Year period.
On the tram the cap is 460 yen a day on Saturdays, Sundays, holidays and over the New Year period.
| Credit card tap | Fare | Coverage |
|---|---|---|
| Subway | Weekdays: up to 830 yen Holidays: up to 520 yen | All 3 subway lines Namboku, Tozai, Toho |
| Tram | Holidays: up to 460 yen | Whole tram line |
※ Holidays means Saturdays, Sundays, public holidays and the New Year period (December 29 to January 3).

✅ Does the fare cap work with IC transit cards?
IC transit cards such as Suica, PASMO and SAPICA don't get the daily fare cap.
The daily cap only applies when you tap a credit, debit or prepaid card.
- Cap applies ⭕️: contactless cards such as Visa, Mastercard, JCB, American Express, Diners Club, Discover and UnionPay, and smartphones or smartwatches with those cards registered
- Cap doesn't apply ❌: physical and mobile IC transit cards such as Suica, PASMO, SAPICA and ICOCA
📌 A supported credit card registered in Apple Pay and the like does get the daily cap, but mobile Suica, PASMO and other IC transit cards don't.

✅ How to get the credit card fare cap
- On the subway, tap the same card on the gate reader when you enter and when you exit.
- On the tram, tap the reader inside the car when you get off.
- A physical card and a smartphone or smartwatch are counted separately, so use the same payment method all day.
- ✔️ The daily cap applies to adult fares only.
- ✔️ Subway and tram spending isn't combined. Each has its own cap.
- ✔️ If you pay for several people on the tram with one card, the cap only covers one adult.
- ✔️ On the subway, the day runs from 3:00 a.m. to 2:59 a.m. the next morning.
