About Tokyo Koenji

Koenji (高円寺), located in Tokyo’s Suginami Ward (杉並区), is a local neighborhood centered on JR Koenji Station (高円寺駅). What started as a free-spirited cultural scene in the 1960s has grown into a hub for alternative music and subculture. Today, the area is packed with cafes, curry shops, izakaya (居酒屋), used bookstores, and over 100 vintage shops with their own distinct personalities.

It’s often compared to Harajuku or Shimokitazawa (下北沢), but Koenji has a much more local feel than those commercialized areas, and prices tend to be lower than in Shinjuku or Shibuya. That’s why Tokyo locals consider it a “hidden neighborhood travel spot.”

Every year on the last weekend of August, the Koenji Awa Odori (阿波おどり) festival takes place. Started in 1957 to revitalize the local shopping district, it has grown to a scale rivaling its origin in Tokushima (徳島). With more than 10,000 dancers and over 1 million spectators, it’s one of the largest summer street festivals in Tokyo.

How to Get to Tokyo Koenji

JR Koenji Station (高円寺駅) is served by both the Chuo Line and Chuo-Sobu Line, giving it excellent access from central Tokyo.

Koenji Station has two exits — South (Minami-guchi, 南口) and North (Kita-guchi, 北口) — and your route depends on where you're going.

• North Exit: Daiichi Ichiba (大一市場), Junjo Shotengai (純情商店街), Nakadori Shotengai (仲通り商店街), and other restaurant-dense areas

• South Exit: Pal Shotengai (パル商店街), Look Shotengai (ルック商店街), and other vintage shop streets

Tokyo Koenji Vintage Shopping Course

Around Koenji Station, several shopping streets — Pal Shotengai (パル商店街), Look Shotengai (ルック商店街), and others — are connected one after another. Along these alleys, more than 100 vintage shops and Koenji accessory stores are packed tightly together, making it a great place for serious Koenji shopping.

Koenji is often called one of Tokyo’s two great vintage meccas alongside Shimokitazawa (下北沢), but prices in Koenji’s vintage shops are far more reasonable.

Safari — The icon of Koenji vintage

A flagship-level shop you can’t skip on a Koenji vintage tour. Inside Koenji alone there are six branches, from the 1st to the 6th, and each is strictly divided by genre — the 1st branch handles luxury and high-end items, the 2nd specializes in Ralph Lauren, the 3rd in dress shoes, and so on. It’s fun to pick the branch that matches your taste.

A vintage shop centered on American style. With strong lineups of denim, military, and college pieces at reasonable prices, it’s also approachable for first-time vintage shoppers.

A wide range of items spanning eras and countries — and the leather shoe collection in particular is overwhelming. Because the owner buys based on design rather than brand, the lineup is unique and not tied to any particular label.

A women’s vintage specialty shop tucked inside an alley off Pal Shotengai (パル商店街). They buy on a different theme each season, so the atmosphere shifts every time you visit.

Carries both high-quality vintage clothing and jewelry. There are plenty of Koenji-style pieces and dainty vintage accessories.

Most vintage shops open around 12-1 PM. Stock changes daily, so rather than going in with a specific item in mind, it works better to walk the alleys and pick up whatever catches your eye. Plan on 2-3 hours of breathing room for a Koenji vintage tour.

Tokyo Koenji Restaurants

Koenji has 12 Tabelog Top 100 restaurants. Four of them are curry shops alone, which is why the area is also called Tokyo’s top curry mecca. Here are some Koenji spots that are great to drop into after vintage shopping.

Izakaya: Akiya (空き屋)

A local izakaya that became famous after Choo Sung-hoon called it the “izakaya of his life” on YouTube. Tucked away in an alley off the North Exit (北口), it’s full of local atmosphere. Oden (おでん) is the main draw, and the handwritten menu and oden illustration board capture the shop’s vibe perfectly. The signature dishes Choo Sung-hoon ordered are mackerel tataki (さばたたき, ¥800), yellowtail tataki sashimi (ぶりたたき刺し, ¥980), and crab cream croquette (かにクリームコロッケ). Single oden pieces run ¥150-300, so you can try several without worrying about the bill, and the carefully selected regional sake (地酒) and seasonal fruit sours are excellent. Open evenings only. There’s a ¥100 per person seat charge (席料).

Yakiniku: Yakiniku Kokochi (焼肉ここち)

The highest-rated yakiniku spot in Koenji is Yakiniku Kokochi. There are two locations in Koenji — the main shop and the market shop.

Curry — Tokyo Koenji is a Curry Mecca

Within a 500m radius of the station, four Tabelog Top 100 curry shops are clustered together. You could eat curry for all three meals of the day and have a different one each time.

In a tiny 3.5-tsubo space tucked into an alley in Daiichi Ichiba, this shop has held a Tabelog Top 100 curry spot for five consecutive years. The signature plate lets you try two of their distinctive curries — like pork vindaloo or chicken curry — together.

Tempura: Tensuke (天すけ)

A Tabelog Top 100 tempura shop (2022) famous for the chef’s performance behind the counter. There are 12 counter seats and they serve lunch only. The signature dish is the Tamago Lunch donburi — a crispy egg tempura placed on top of rice.

Udon: Toko-i (とこ井)

The signature dish is tsuke udon (つけうどん) — udon eaten by dipping the chilled noodles into the sauce.

Ramen: Nakasu Yatai Hakata Ramen Kenta (初代 健太)

A Hakata tonkotsu ramen shop with an unusual setup — your bowl is already on the counter before you even sit down.

Bakery: Shigekuniya 55 Bakery (しげくに屋55ベーカリー)

Tokyo Koenji Day Course

1️⃣ Lunch — Tensuke (天すけ) tempura, before the wait builds up
We recommend arriving right when lunch service starts. The performance of the chef frying tempura right in front of you, paired with the signature Tamago Lunch donburi, makes Tensuke one of the standout Koenji restaurants.

2️⃣ Afternoon — Vintage shopping tour
This is when serious Koenji shopping begins. Most vintage shops open between noon and 1 PM, so visiting after lunch is the most efficient plan. Centered on Pal Shotengai (パル商店街) by the South Exit (南口), browse freely through Koenji's flagship Safari, the Amekaji icon SLUT, classic shoe specialist WHISTLER, and more. The deep appeal of the Koenji vintage shopping street will easily eat up 2-3 hours.

3️⃣ Late afternoon — Dessert break
After shopping, recharge your sugar at Patisserie l'abricotier (パティスリー ラブリコチエ), a Tabelog Top 100 patisserie. Seating is limited to 6, so a wait can build up — if there are no seats, taking a quick break on the benches along the nearby Momozonogawa Greenway (桃園川緑道) is a nice option too.

4️⃣ Evening — Wrap up at an izakaya or yakiniku
Close out the Koenji day at Akiya (空き屋) — Choo Sung-hoon's "izakaya of his life" — over oden and sake, soaking in the romance of a local Koenji izakaya. Dinner at Yakiniku Kokochi (焼肉ここち), Koenji's number-one yakiniku, is also a solid choice.
