Yakiniku Bovin d'Or Takanawa: Sendai Beef Lunch & Prices
Tokyo Mate
Yakiniku Bovin d'Or (焼肉 Bovin d'Or) is a yakiniku restaurant on the 28th floor of NEWoMan Takanawa LUFTBAUM, a minute's walk from JR Takanawa Gateway Station. On a public holiday I booked lunch through Tabelog and had the Sendai beef sirloin yaki-sukiyaki lunch set (3,980 yen, 9 items). From a window seat you can see the Rainbow Bridge, and the view was good too.

※ When I visited, they also had a 3,480-yen yakiniku lunch for their first anniversary.
I booked the Sendai beef sirloin yaki-sukiyaki lunch set (仙台牛サーロイン焼きすきやきのランチセット) on Tabelog. It costs 3,980 yen and comes with salad, soup, Sendai beef and rice.
On Saturdays, Sundays and holidays everyone has to order one drink, and reservations are for 90 minutes.

Six-cut Sendai beef platter and sirloin yaki-sukiyaki
At Bovin d'Or you have to order one drink per person with lunch courses on Saturdays, Sundays and holidays.
We ordered the Gorogoro frozen grape soda and the strawberry soda, 780 yen each. They're packed with frozen fruit that slowly melts as you drink, and the sweet, tart taste went well between bites of rich yakiniku.

A salad and a wakame soup come with the set too. There aren't many other side dishes, so instead of finishing the salad at the start, I kept some back to eat with the grilled meat, and that worked well.

For the yaki-sukiyaki, you grill a big piece of sirloin and eat it with a jidori (地鶏) egg yolk sauce. The yolk sauce came separately.

Sendai beef (仙台牛) is Japanese Black cattle raised by registered farms in Miyagi Prefecture that meets official standards such as an A5 or B5 grade. The six-cut platter in the 3,980-yen lunch set is all Sendai beef.
The six cuts are kalbi, upper kalbi, special kalbi, zabuton, ichibo and sirloin.

The rice is Tsuyahime (つや姫) from Miyagi Prefecture. When I went, you could choose a small, regular or large portion.

I didn't grill the big sirloin for long, just seared the outside, then dipped it in the yolk sauce. It was tender enough to pull apart with chopsticks, and the rich yolk sauce made the deep flavour of the sirloin taste softer.

Depending on the cut, I switched between the spicy sauce and the sweet sauce. Tasting the meat on its own first and then adding sauce made the difference easy to notice.

Grilling them myself, each cut had a different amount of fat and texture. The kalbi cuts were savoury with a gentle sweetness, and the fat in the zabuton and sirloin spread softly for a richer taste.

While the meat grilled, the smoke was pulled straight down under the grill, so not much of it spread around the table.
The grill also turns on when you put meat on it and turns down or off when you take the meat away. That made it easy to cook cuts like sirloin that you don't grill for long.
FAQ: window seats, one drink each and booking courses
Q. Can I book a window seat at Bovin d'Or?
A. You can't really lock in a window seat. TableCheck says seating requests may not be met, and Tabelog states that it doesn't accept seat requests, so a window seat can't be confirmed at the booking stage.

Q. Do I have to order one drink each at weekday lunch too?
A. The one-drink rule is only stated for Saturdays, Sundays and holidays. Weekday bookings don't show it. Soft drinks started at 450 yen when I went.
Q. Can people in my group order different lunch courses?
A. For a reserved course, everyone in the group has to order the same course. The booking states that you order the same course for the number of people, so each person can't choose a different one.

Slowly grilling Sendai beef while looking out over Tokyo Bay from the 28th floor felt more relaxed than just a meal. If you want a view and yakiniku together in Tokyo, Bovin d'Or was a lunch I'll remember for a long time.
